Another homage to Tschumi:

Russian anarchist Michael Bakunin once claimed that “the urge to destroy is also a creative urge”. 

His great political rival, Marx, identified the concept of creative destruction as the process by which capitalism clears the ground (be it through war or economic crisis), to pave the way for new innovation. 

The organism sweeps across the landscape, consuming all.

There are numerous ways to equate landscape with language. Yet such equations often amount to a reduction and an exclusion. A reduction, insofar as these equations usually become distorted as soon as landscape tries to produce meaning (which meaning? whose meaning?), and thus end up reducing language to its mere combinatory logic. An exclusion, in sofar as these equations generallty omit some of the important findings made in Vienna at the beginning of the century, where language was first seen as a condition of the unconscious. Here, dreams were analysed as language as well as through language; language was called 'the main street of the unconscious'. Generally speaking, it appeared as a series of fragments (the Freudian notion of fragments does not presuppose the breaking of an image, or of a totality, but the dialectical multiplicity of a process).

So, too, landscape when equated with language can only be read as a series of fragements that make up the reality of a landscape.

My dissertation topic is on Bernard Tschumi and deconstruction/ deconstructivism... coincidentally, this is also one of my presentation topics for Garden Design History...

Don't want to publish too much concerning dissertation here but I am planning on employing some of his ideas in the masterplan... furthermore, I found these postcards that I think are very interesting!



There part of a series Tschumi did in the seventies called Advertisements for Architecture. I like this next one A LOT...




What do you think- is murder in the street different from murder in a cathedral? is architecture defined by the actions it witnesses or its form and materiality? Can the same be said for space... is space landscape?
There are one or two more in this great book I found in the library called Tschumi- lots of connections between bondage, rules, architecture and erotica.
Reminds me a great deal of Guy Debord's remark I came in the cobblestones, which is what landscape is all about, right?
